Care Worker

POST TITLE: Care Worker

Responsible to: Care Manager

Location: 28 Glenburnie Road, Tooting Bec

Hours: To be discussed at interview

Purpose of Position

To share positively with other staff in meeting the personal care needs of service users in a way that respects the dignity of the individual and promotes independence. Care provided by care workers is expected to include care that would reasonably be given by members of the service user’s own family and is not expected to include tasks that would normally be expected to be undertaken by a trained nurse.

Principal Responsibilities

  1. To assist service users who need help with getting up in the morning, dressing, undressing, washing, bathing, and getting to and from the bathroom.
  2. To help the service user with mobility problems and other physical disabilities, including incontinence and help in use and Care aids and personal equipment.
  3. To care for service users who are temporarily sick and needing, for example, minor dressings, bed nursing, help with feeding etc.
  4. To help care for service users who are dying.
  5. To help in the promotion of mental and physical activity of service users through talking to them, taking them out, sharing with them in activities such as reading, writing, hobbies and recreations.
  6. To make and change beds; tidy rooms; do light cleaning and empty commodes.
  7. To inspect, launder and arrange for service users’ clothing to be mended, where necessary.
  8. To set tables and trays; serve meals; feed service users who need help; prepare light meals and wash up; tidy and clear the dining room.
  9. To answer emergency bells, the door and the telephone and greet visitors.
  10. To read and write reports, and take part in staff and service users’ meetings and in training activities as directed.
  11. To perform such other duties as may reasonably be required.
  12. To comply with Tooting Neighbourhood Centre’s Code of Conduct and Policies at all times.
  13. To report to the Care Manager any significant changes in the health or circumstances of a service user.
  14. To encourage service users to remain as independent as possible and to enable service users to look after themselves according to the Care Plan and to encourage rehabilitation.
  15. Perform other duties as may from time to time be required that are commensurate with the general duties and within the scope of this post.

Senior Care Worker

POST TITLE: Senior Care Worker
Responsible to: Care Manager/Assistant Care Manager (Home Care)
Location: 28 Glenburnie Road, Tooting Bec
Hours: 9:00am – 5:00pm

Purpose

To assist the Registered Home Care Manager and Assistant Care Manager in carrying out the day-to-day running and development of the Home Care Service, as well as to give direct help, care and support to service users assessed as requiring assistance in their own homes.

Responsibilities

To carry out quality checks and service user monitoring on behalf of Home Care Services.
To respond to correspondence and communication relating to Care matters.
To assist with the development of Quality Assurance and administrative structures.
To assist with the development of new Care matters.
To assist with the monitoring and evaluation of Care plans and service user requirements.
To assist with administrative tasks as and when required.
To liaise with Social Workers Community Workers and Area Health Authorities Staff to achieve holistic care for Service users.
To undertake a manageable caseload.
To undertake any duties necessary for fulfilling the basic objectives of the Home care service.
To complete necessary monitoring forms and reports for quality assurance and quality checks.
To be cognisant with all TNC operational Policies and Procedures and ensure they are adhered to.
To foster a professional relationship with all carers.
To adhere to Tooting Neighbourhood Centre’s Anti Discrimination and Equal Opportunities Policies and Procedures.
To adhere to the TNC Code of Practice.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES

Social Care

Assisting clients with personal care and hygiene as required (lifting with a second carer). Care will include:

  • Mouth, hair and nail care (no cutting or shaving with electrical appliances).
  • Toileting
  • Dressing

Domestic Care

Preparing snacks/meals, cleaning, washing/laundrette, ironing, making and changing bed and feeding pets when required

General Administrative Work

Maintain accurate records/receipts of all transactions undertaken on behalf of clients.

Maintain safe custody of the client’s keys (to be discussed with the Asst. Care Manager/Care Manager).

Deal with queries on behalf of clients as appropriate. All problems are to be discussed with the Care Manager before advising clients on issues such as bills arrears, debts, telephone calls or personal problems, etc.

Maintain all procedures, policies and instructions laid down by Tooting Neighbourhood Centre, as it relates to Care.

Ensure that all administrative work is either completed daily or prioritised so that a backlog does not exist

Attend training courses and meetings as organised by the Assistant Care Manager

Perform other duties as will from time to time be required that are commensurate with the general duties and within the scope of this post

PERSON SPECIFICATION – Senior Care Worker

  • Must be of smart appearance with good personal hygiene standards.
  • To conduct risk assessment reports on behalf of the Assistant Care Manager/Care Manager
  • The post-holder will need at least two years' experience in the field of Social Care, and must be able to work on his or her own initiative.
  • He/she will need excellent communication skills, including the ability to assess complex issues, as well as the ability to deliver written and oral presentations.
  • It is essential that applicants understand the concept of Community Care and be able to work confidentially.
  • The Senior Care Worker will need to be able to work within a team and under pressure occasionally. Some evening and weekend work may be necessary.
  • Candidate must have at least NVQ Level 2 or 3 or working towards that qualification.
  • Must have at least two years’ experience of Care Management or Supervision of staff in a domiciliary, day or residential setting.
  • Must have an understanding of the concepts of Community Care, including the need for confidentiality and the need to respect the individual’s rights (including the right to take risks, to privacy, dignity and self esteem and the promotion of independence within a service user’s home).
  • To have an understanding of how the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 affects the provision of domiciliary services, including an awareness of hazards within a private domestic setting.
  • A good knowledge and understanding of the Black and Ethnic Minority customs and dialect is desirable.
